Our bodies have an innate wisdom to take care of us and help us heal. When we are cut we don’t have to consciously decide to clot our blood or send white blood cells to heal infection. Likewise, if we are threatened, our bodies kick us into fight, flight or freeze mode. With a rush of adrenaline these are our primary defense mechanisms designed specifically to save our lives. Although modern daily life isn’t usually life threatening, modern stress still activates this primary defense system. Fortunately we are able to use our minds over our natural physical response so we don’t punch our boss in the face, go running down the hall screaming or collapse on the floor appearing dead.
Nevertheless, when this system gets engaged our bodies still feel the need to discharge the energy. It doesn’t go away. When this energy is not permitted to be expressed in the moment it gets stored and can unconsciously be expressed in anger management problems, anxiety or depression. These symptoms are usually not limited to one incident. They usually indicate a more long term way of coping with some form of powerlessness.
If you are experiencing any one or a combination of these problems, I can help you begin to clarify what’s happening to you in your thoughts and physical reactions and bring it to the conscious level. When you are more aware you are better able to make choices that express your needs and cope more effectively in challenging situations. This way you can begin to feel not so powerless against your emotional reactions or physical symptoms.
